Proverbs 1 – Seeking God’s Grace and Wisdom

Blog - Psalm 11911

It’s summer, it’s busy and I am trying to do several studies right now, with another starting next week.   No matter how busy we are with children home, swimming, yard work, family get togethers, trying to organize the house, we still need some time to soak in His Word and refresh ourselves.

The study started Monday, and well I had a grandchild here with me and we met one of my sisters and ran errands to Wal-Mart, and he spent the night and I ran him home yesterday and then worked on identity theft.  Yes my SSN was stolen, but you know what – my identity in Christ can NEVER be stolen. It was an awesome, fun day!

It’s Wednesday (now it’s Thursday), the tropical storm Bill hit this morning and the sunshine is gone and the birds are not singing this summer day.  I decided it was a great day to catch up on Proverbs, blog a bit, have a third cup of coffee and see if I can catch up. (P.S. It’s Thursday and this girl is behind).

What did I find in Proverbs 1?  It’s a call to action, it’s a chapter of wisdom.  Oh my goodness I love studying using the SOAK method they teach over at GMG.  I bought the book to use and now trying to decide which verses to soak.  I just want to soak them all.  This chapter is so good, and guess I will have to SOAK more than one.

How does a man/woman become wise?  It’s to revere and trust the Lord. If we are studying, wisdom is an on-going process. We need to be earnestly seeking His wisdom, and in turn, be doers of the Word.  We are never too old to learn, and I find no matter how many times I read a verse, I can learn something new when I study it.

God is calling us to wisdom in all things – our lives, our homes, our churches, our cities, our nation.  We need to seek His face or He will turn from us.

VERSES 4-6 – “for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young – let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.”
If I am to give guidance to my children, my grandchildren, and others, I must LISTEN to His guidance.  Verses 23 and 33 also say to listen. So many days we are too busy with our to-do lists, our agendas, and life in general that we do not make the time to dwell with Him and listen.  Do I really listen when I feel Him nudging me?  Honestly, not always.

VERSE 7 –  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”  The message version says, “”Start with God —the first step in learning is bowing down to God ; only fools thumb their noses at such wisdom and learning”. (Pro 1:7 MSG)”
In order to grow I need to love the wisdom and instruction I find in the Bible.  It ALL starts with Him, but I have to take that step.

VERSES 8-9 – “My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:  For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.”                                                                                             Have there been times we did not heed the instruction of our fathers and mothers?  I was sort of a rule follower, that first child type thing.  I do remember fibbing one time to my Dad and how much trouble I got in.  I didn’t fib again and still dislike it when I know someone has fibbed to me or “stretched the truth”.  This verse teaches us their instruction is an “ornament of grace”.  How beautiful is that?  That “chains about thy neck” not so sure about, but if we listen I guess those are chains that will keep us safe.

A call to me as a mother and a grandparent to pray for my children and grandchildren, and yes I even pray for future grandchildren and their spouses.  Our children are bombarded.    A reminder to me also to listen to my elders.  Have you ever rolled your eyes at your parents?  I wonder what God thought at that moment.

Are you leaving a Godly heritage?  Am I leaving a Godly heritage?

VERSE 10 -“My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them.”
Sin can make us feel popular and it is enticing.  Our lives will be affected.  Don’t try to do what everyone else is doing unless they are following God.

VERSE 15 -” my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths.”
Do not set foot in the paths of those who are sinning.  It’s easy to follow the world.  Look at our world today and how we are so accepting of things that are not godly.

VERSE 19 – “Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it.”
What gain are those people who stole my SSN experiencing?  I am praying for whoever it was – praying that God will prick their heart and let them see Him.  What gain are things of this Earth?  Are you constantly trying to gain more “stuff”?

VERSE 23 –  ” Repent at my rebuke!  Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings.”
Has He shown you an area in your life you need to work on?  Repent.  He convicts us and shows us what we need to change and sometimes it is through discipline so we stop and listen.  He points things out to us so that we grow and go in the path He has for us.  Sometimes we need to give up things like food, drinking, smoking, drugs, porn, laziness.

VERSES 27-28 –  “When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.  Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me.”                                                                                                                                                                   Why do we wait to call upon Him when we are in trouble?  We should be talking and calling to Him every day, every moment prayerfully thanking Him for all He has done.”

VERSES 30-31 – “Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.”
How long have I not accepted His advise, and even spurned His rebuke as my cholesterol rose and am on blood pressure medicine?  Too long.  I was reminded in my Bible study at church one Sunday as a lady was sharing about how we carry Jesus into our filth.  Specifically, she used an affair as an example.  We walk into it and carry Jesus into that filth.  I sit there and thought about my one big sin – food and how I carry Jesus to that pantry with me every single time I walk in there and eat something I shouldn’t or too much of it.  I carry Him and accept His advise when I spend time exercising and eating healthy.

VERSE 32-33 “For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety. and be at ease, without fear of harm.”                                                    Complacency and waywardness will destroy us.  A promise of peace to me even like this week when my identity was stolen that I will fear no harm.  When I am seeking Him and not material things, I can find peace.    My waywardness with food can kill me and destroy me.  I must stay in the Word – listen and do.  Who is the first one I turn to when I have a problem, when I can’t sleep, when I am afraid?  I have to admit it is not always Him.  That verse says listen.  He says we have nothing to fear so why, why, why do we worry laying awake at night.  Why are we overwhelmed, exhausted, anxious? Is it because we are not listening to Him?

WISDOM is calling.  It’s our choice. He’s give us free will to make choices.  Bad choices equal bad consequences.

  1. I love this! I always feel like Proverbs is a challenge, because it feels too disjointed to do a chapter a day, and I’m afraid my mind might wander. Thank you for breaking it down like this! Much more helpful. Maybe I’ll take another stab after I’m done with my Romans 6 study.

  2. Accepting His advice and godly advice is so tough at times. Grateful for these wise reminders #RaRaLinkup sister! Also -praying for the future kids is amazing. I do that even though we don’t expect children anytime soon because I know the Lord already knows!!
