31 Days of Faith, Family, Home and Joy -Day 30 – WELCOME November

1 Nov

WELCOME November!

Another beautiful month of October has past and it’s been a fun one.

I can’t believe how busy we have been with grandchildren.  We don’t take a moment with them for granted..  Many grandparents are not as fortunate with grandchildren living in another state or even another country.

We’ve been to the Dallas Arboretum

Six Flags Over Texas (no pictures to share)

a Fall carnival at church,

and the Shadow Oaks Pumpkin Patch

with grandkids this month, and so many other smaller things as well as being blessed to watch them each week, and even the four year old got to stay with us three nights while his Mom and Dad were out of town.  Making MEMORIES.

I’ve had the house decorated since September, and it won’t come down until after we celebrate Thanksgiving.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love, love, love Christmas, but these days it really bothers me that the stores have already gotten rid of Fall decorations and forgotten about Thanksgiving.  I wish these stores were brave enough to not start Christmas in September/October.  I truly believe they are missing sales by rushing each season.  I went to buy fall stuff two weeks ago and let me tell you there was nothing left worth buying, and I’m not buying Christmas this early unless it is a gift for my family.

But all that said, I may start decorating the upstairs for Christmas since no one will be up there until Christmas Eve and it will help some of the rush and stress after Thanksgiving.

How many times have I read that verse and just rushed over it?  As I am reading through Proverbs and soaking one verse from each chapter, I am finding they have a much stronger impact.

It says do NOT boast about my tomorrows.  Wow have I done that – you bet I have – vacations, retreats, get-togethers way before they happened.  I find myself asking my Bible study friends, “What are you doing this weekend.”  A much more appropriate question would be after the weekend and ask them what they did over the weekend.

You and I are NOT guaranteed tomorrow.  As we plan our calendars and to-do lists we know God is already there tomorrow.  He knows what our tomorrow is going to look like. He knows those emergencies that are about to come up and when we are going to have to drop everything and minister.  He knows when He is going to place someone on our mind that needs an encouraging word.  He knows when the phone is going to ring, and how we will respond.

We see posters that say make it count, live for today, live life to it’s fullest, and we say things like “tomorrow I am going to work out, tomorrow I will start that diet, tomorrow I will eat healthier, tomorrow I am going to call that friend or relative I have not talked to in a very long time, tomorrow I’ll message her.”   TOMORROW, TOMORROW, TOMORROW!  What about TODAY?  What if tomorrow never comes?

“Yesterday is gone.  Tomorrow has yet to come.  We have only today.  Let us begin.”  Mother Teresa

Father may I wake up each day knowing I only have today.  AMEN!

31 Days of Faith, Family, Home and Joy -Day 27 – Pumpkins Galore

I love Fall, and I love the darkness in the morning studying.  I love this verse, and as I read it today I did give thanks for our adult children, their spouses, and our five grandchildren.  Look at those two boys – cousins as we visited the Dallas Arboretum recently.

I love Fall decorating almost as much as I do Christmas decorating.  It’s fun seeing the grandkids walk in and saying, “Nana’s got pumpkins”.

This year we have been to see pumpkins at two places – the Dallas Arboretum and Shady Oaks Pumpkin Patch.   We went to Six Flags and our church carnival.  This was all in three weeks.  My husband told me I should have enough of pumpkins this year.  Honestly, I love them and there are ceramic ones all over the house, and real ones outside with mums.

Pumpkins these days come in all shapes and sizes.

Just look at that pictures and the wonders of those boys and all those different pumpkins as different as you and I!

Pumpkins are no longer just orange.  Just look at all these we saw.  They come in so many colors – white, browns, greens, hints of yellow, orange:

Pumpkins are smooth.  They are bumpy and warty.  The are all sorts of things.  In the picture below the white bumpy ones (light orange) are called peanut pumpkins, and the orange ones behind are called knucklehead pumpkins.

IMG_8735-1

So many different kinds of pumpkins.  So much fun seeing them.

31 Days of Faith, Family, Home and Joy – Day 7 – Things I Like About Fall

8 Oct

Fall has not really arrived here in Texas even though the calendar says it has, but come Tuesday the low will be in the 50s and high in the  70s.

Cooler Walks – come Tuesday morning that 50s will be a little cool for me.  Might have to wait for an afternoon walk.

Our leaves have been falling, but it’s more because of lack of rain in September.  They are still pretty though, and I love to see them floating down.

Hot Chocolate – Don’t you love hot chocolate especially with marshmallows.  Our grandsons love it.

Fuzzy socks – Nothing like a good pair of fuzzy socks, except my flip flops.

Rain – I think I enjoy the Fall rains more than anytime of the year.  In the Spring we have so many storms and tornadoes that it’s takes the enjoyment out of the rain.

Decorating – I decorated early this year.  It’s almost as much as Christmas.

Pumpkins and Mums – I get excited about pumpkins and mums.  I love our two-year older toddler walking in and saying, “Nana has pumpkins.”

Pumpkin Patches – Can’t wait to go to the pumpkin patch with the two toddler grandsons again this year.

Soup and Stew – We had a little cool streak a few weeks ago.  I made my Hamburger Soup.  I think it is on the menu again later this week.  Love soup and cornbread.

Cuddling up to a good book – I enjoy reading a good fiction book.  Most days I’m in my Bible and reading whatever the current study book is in my church and on-line Bible studies.  I am a coach volunteer for Proverbs 31 Online Bible Studies.  Our next study is Max Lucado’s book Anxious For Nothing.

Candy Corn with Peanuts – I love this.  Just two ingredients.  See recipe here.  I also love putting it in a candy dish that belonged to my Mom.

Pumpkin Bread – I love my Mom’s pumpkin bread recipe.  Not sure where she got it (maybe off a can of pumpkin makes sense), but it’s very old.  I’ve been making it myself for fifty years.  You can find the recipe here.

Thanksgiving Meals – Thanksgiving meals always mean joining with some of the family.  Since I’ve lost both parents most years now it’s just with the kids.

31 Days of Faith, Family, Home and Joy – Day 3 – Did Someone Say Coffee-eeee?

3 Oct

Coffee.  I can’t wait for my first cup of the morning, and it’s so good in the Fall and Winter.

I  get up, wash my face, make the bed and drink a big glass of water, then breakfast, and then depending on the day, it might be two cups or six cups of coffee.  If it’s cold outside well there is no telling.  I begin my Bible study about 5:45 and that’s usually with my very first cup of coffee.

I do not like coffee black, and it needs to be sweetened.  Most of the time when I can find it I buy the low-fat whip cream.  It’s really good in the coffee, but this time of the year I am shopping for creamers.  I love the Fall flavors, and at Christmas gingerbread is my favorite.

Today I had a doctor’s appointment and it was hot and muggy.  Stopped and bought this salted caramel mocha frappuccino. YUM!
